Zahra Joya - 'The Vanishing Girl of Kabul'

It is five years now since the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan and women have been banned from every aspect of their lives.

Zahra Joya is a journalist from Afghanistan, now exiled in London, and is the founder of “ Rukhshana Media “, one of Afghanistan's first news agencies dedicated to women's stories.  Her book, “ The Vanishing Girl of Kabul “ has just been published in Britain.

Zahra and her team continue reporting under immense danger and her courageous journalism has earned global recognition, including as one of Time Magazine’s “ Women of The Year in 2022 “, “ The U.S. Foreign Press Award for 2022 “ from the U.S. Foreign Press Correspondents Association Award, and she was among BBC’s “ 100 Women “ in 2022.

She is now a Fellow at Hughes Hall at Cambridge University and a colleague of Sir Laurie Bristow, the last British Ambassador in Kabul, who gave such a memorable talk - " Kabul - Final Call " - last summer at Avoncroft Museum.
